Reading is one of the best ways to escape from this disturbing and annoying world. I always read a super interesting novel in my free time, instead of being a couch potato with chips and salsa. Here is my relaxing routine, make a cup of tea with milk, grab a book and soak into the bubble bath. From a very new reader to a long-term collector, I already own hundreds of books. One of my favorite authors is Tess Gerritsen, a woman who graduated from Stanford University and then studied at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and received a doctorate in medicine. However, she chose a different path—to become an author and then an international best-selling author (This is also one of the reasons why I love her. She is so brave to make changes, and she is also brave to challenge an unknown and unfamiliar field.) She published her first novel “Call After Midnight" in 1987, which is a romantic thriller novel. Then eight romantic and mystery novels were published. In 1996, Tess began to write thriller and suspense novels, including “Harvest“, “Bone Garden“, “The Surgeon“, “The Sinner“, “The Mephisto Club“, “Die again“, etc. Her books have been translated into 31 languages and more than 15 million copies and have been sold worldwide.
The content of this book is basically around a doctor named Abby, who works at at Boston’s Bayside Hospital. As a doctor, she has to face and deal with several difficult problems. Should a heart from the crasher be given to a dying boy, or a wealthy old woman? The plot goes further, Abby discovered a murderous, incredible conspiracy. Abby’s every move produced a vicious backlash… The terrible truth is waiting for her…
REVIEW AND COMMENT
The first time that I read the novel written by Tess Gerritsen during my college period is “Harvest." Since then, I have fallen in love with the author’s narrative and story content. As my major is also related to biomedical science, I am super obsessed with her novels (As I mentioned before, she has a biomedical background.) Because of this reason, I started the journey of reading every novel written by her.
Okay, back to the review. This novel is absolutely a stunning book! Gripping from the start, I was captivated by every single page I read that I couldn’t put it down. This is Gerritsen’s first medical thriller, and I am so glad that she made a change. I have to be honest that I am not into romantic novels at all. Well, I literally finished it in a weekend (I could’t sleep, cause I really wanted to know the final result.)
This novel contains several medical terminology. I am not a doctor, of course I couldn’t understand everything. However, it was really interesting to me. I also loved to explore moral, ethical aspects during reading this novel. It made me feel that something was pulled out from my heart. In the beginning, Abby was stuck between whether the dying boy should receive the heart transplant or the wealthy older woman. She went back and forth with herself about what she did and what she could have done right. “Was I right to break some laws to save a young teenager? Or should I have just left him die without the transplant?” I know, these same situations happen in our real world, and it can be very tough to distinguish which one is right, and which one is wrong.
Actually, I was stuck here for a while. I couldn’t help thinking that what would I do. would I choose the same option like Abby? Or maybe I couldn’t. For me, It was really hard to make a final decision. But all in all, this is a five star, two thumbs up, book. Tess Gerritsen and her book Harvest deserve much praise. In the end, I’m so grateful, so thankful that I still have a beating heart…
If you already read this novel, I am willing to hear from you. Comment below and share your thoughts with me. XO// Claire💋
